10 Steps How I write & published a book?

8 May

Self Publish a book – if one of your dreams is to write & publish a book someday, I may suggest a few quick tips for you without engaging a publisher.

This was how I got my first book – “Small Fish Conquering The Big Pond”, published back in 2014.

1. Pick a topic that you’re passionate
2. Breakdown the layout of the book into a few chapters – ideally 6 – 8 chapters
3. Break each chapter down into sub-chapters – ideally 4 – 6 sub-chapters

Example Chapter 1: Creative Marketing
Sub-chapter 1.1: Marketing is about creating a difference
Sub-chapter 1.2: What is USP?
Sub-chapter 1.3: Finding your niche

*Don’t start writing your book until you have completed the layout of the book from the first chapter until the last.

4. Start writing your book (this is where the real challenge begin and kills-off most aspiring authors)
Instead of sitting in front of a computer and start writing, I took out my phone and recorded the contents of the book using an audio recorder, chapter by chapter. I just said what I feel like saying and what should be included in the chapter.

5. Then I passed all my recording to a copy-writer who help me converted the recording into text. This was how I first drafted my manuscript and begin editing the entire book with the help of my copy-writer.

*If you choose not to use a copy-writer, you can now opt for using temi.com. Temi is an online voice to text converter, it only cost you $0.10 per minutes.

6. Your goal is to have about 2000+ word per chapter and combining all the chapters you would have a book about 80-120 pages in A5 size format.

7. Once you have done with your manuscript, passed it to a graphic designer to get the book done from cover to cover. (This was what I did back then)

*Or you can opt to use online software like designrr.io to help you design and layout your book.

8. In the same time, you need to apply an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) & CIP (Catalogue in Publishing) for your book to be officially published. And if you’re from Malaysia, you can apply ISBN & CIP from our National Libabry (http://www.pnm.gov.my/index.php/pages/view/18), follow the guiding steps from the website, download the forms and submit the required documents will do.

*Take note that the application of ISBN and CIP in Malaysia is FREE, some nonsense consultant out there is charging RM 2,000+ to help you apply. #BeCareful

9. Proofread, make sure everything is correct.

10. Printing – 2 options:
(a) if you wish to print your book in large quantity and send it to the bookstore to sell – go for offset printing, lower in cost when you go for large quantity (2000 copies) and have better finishing quality.

(b) if you just wish to print in low quantity and sell it on demand – then go for digital print (minimum print is only 20-30 book/print).

or (c) just convert it to an Ebook format

Happy Writing and Publishing.

Alibaba Hangzhou Dream Trip (Part 4) – Final Chapter /

18 Mar

I have met many amusing new friends and learn many things during this trip, having the privilege to visit Alibaba’s office campuses (both Bingjiang & Xixi Campus), as well as Hema supermarket, was indeed an eye-opener for me. But having the honour to have a visit Jack Ma’s Tai Chi Zen Garden was truly an amazing experience.

This Tai Chi Zen Garden located in one of the reserve Wetland Parks of Hangzhou, Jack Ma has built a villa and turned it into his Tai Chi Zen Garden, where he come and learn and practice Tai Chi.

As you can see from the photos attached, the Tai Chi Zen Garden is a very beautiful place, it kept many Jack Ma’s personal belonging, souvenirs, paintings, calligraphies and the photos of some world leaders, celebrities who have visited this place.

Even though we do have not had the privilege to meet Jack Ma in person, but we the honour to meet his personal assistant – Mr Chan Wei, who is also the principle of this Tai Chi Zen Garden and the book author of “This is Jack Ma”.

If you are in Hangzhou, then West Lake is a place you must visit. Despite our busy schedule, we do have the chance to have a boat ride on the famous West Lake on the last day of our journey. the weather was cold, but all of us were warm in our heart, enjoying the beautiful scenery and wildlife.

I have learned much new knowledge and tactics about e-commerce and when e-commerce is incorporated into the new technology of big data, mobile apps, logistics, retails and others. What will be the future of e-commerce look like? And how is it going to help change and shape the world? I guess everyone is still in the exploring stage, including Jack Ma and Alibaba. I do hope Small Fish and myself could contribute a little to our local SMEs in this area.

Lastly, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all my new friends (Malaysia, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, Russia) whom we have much fun together. Let’s stay in touch and hope to visit you in the near future.

Thank you.

Alibaba Hangzhou Dream Trip (Part 3) – Hema /

14 Mar

If you’re a frequent follower of Jack Ma and Alibaba, you probably heard him talked about the “New Retail” concept. Incorporating the latest technologies into the conventional retail industry to revolutionise the new shopping method and improving customer shopping experience.

“Hema” – in Chinese pronunciation it means Hippo (Alibaba like to use an animal to brand their products), is a supermarket that sells fresh seafood, meats, vegetables, fruits and other groceries. But when you dive deeper into its business model, Hema is not an ordinary supermarket like what we have in Malaysia.

It had incorporated a supermarket with F&B businesses, technologies, big data analysis and logistics into one brand new business model (first in the world). If you’re shopping in Hema, you would require paying by using Alipay, it does not accept any transaction in term of cash or credit card. A customer can either psychically shop in the store or used Hema’s App to shop online. Any products that you purchased using Hema’s App, it can be delivered to your doorstep within 30mins (on a 3km radius from any Hema outlet) with no additional delivery charges.

Not only goods can be delivered, but also freshly cooked meal can too deliver to your doorstep. Should you ordered fresh ingredients (seafood, meat, vege & etc) from Hema’s App, the centre kitchen inside Hema can help you process and prepare the foods, customer can choose the cooked foods to be delivered to their home/office or they can choose to dine in at Hema’s food court area.

We do have the pleasure to visit and have lunch at one of the Hema outlets near to Hangzhou’s West Lake, and I must say it is one of the best meal I have during my stay in Hangzhou. It is so good until me and my teammates were so busy eating and we forgot to take any photos of our lunch.

If you ever spot a Hema in China, go in and experience yourself.

Alibaba Hangzhou Dream Trip (Part 2) /

12 Mar

#Alibaba has two main campuses (offices) in Hangzhou China, One of them is Alibaba’s Bingjian Campus (located in the Bingjian District) while another is Alibaba’s Xixi Campus (located in the Xixi District). The distance of both campuses is about an hour drive apart.

We first visited the Alibaba’s Bingjian Campus – there are a total of 5 building blocks on this campus, it housed almost 7000 employees who are working on the Alibaba B2B business (primary focus on Alibaba.com). When we first arrived at the campus, everyone is so excited finding the right spot to take photos with the Alibaba’s signboard, despite the weather temperate on that morning is only at 6 degrees but who cares anyway.

After we are done with our photos taking, we were asking our host where is Jack Ma’s office? Is he around? But too bad luck wasn’t at our side, he was not around. Well, what to do? We proceed touring the campus and later went on to our training room and continue with our e-commerce training.

On the following day, we visited the Alibaba’s Xixi Campus, this is much larger campus compare to Bingjian (like 5 times bigger) and it housed near to 20,000 employees. Alibaba’s Xixi Campus is the primary business hub for Alibaba group, companies like Taobao, TMall, Alipay, AliExpress, Ant Financial, Cainiao and others are all located in this gigantic campus.

The design of these two campuses looks more like a university than a commercial office. You can find there are canteens, restaurants, convenient stalls, library, laundry shops etc. And should you work in Alibaba, you need to address your colleague and manager as “classmate”.

This probably is Alibaba’s culture that Jack Ma wish to cultivate – a university working environment could inspire the Gen Y better, I guess.

to be continued ~~

Alibaba Hangzhou Dream Trip (Part 1) /

Alibaba, Jack Ma,

It’s indeed a great honour to be certified by #Alibaba for becoming an “Alibaba.com GET Lecturer” in Malaysia. Seriously the selection process was much tougher than I thought, at first when I signed-up for the certification course I was thinking it is just like any other certification courses, as long as you completed the training, you surely will be certified.

But it turned out to be not the case, we have to go through not only the training but follow-up with an online examination, presentation and an interview. And finally, out of the 30+ people who attended the process, only three were selected and thank god I am of them. And shortly after the final decision was announced, three of us were invited to Hangzhou, China for this amazing trip.

Jack Ma and his company Alibaba had always been a big name in me, they had created many unbelievable sales records, but exactly how big are they? Actually, I do not have a very clear picture until I have the first-hand experience during this trip.

Alibaba had accomplished many extraordinary works for the last 20 years, they have made global trading become easy and convenient. As stated in Alibaba Group’s mission statement “is to make it easy to do business anywhere.” And they have done it perfectly.

During these few days, I have learned much about #ecommerce, especially on strategies and technique on how Alibaba.com could help our local SMEs better in their exporting business. In Malaysia, we have many great SME company that produced excellent products, many of them are lacking an effective way to source for more high-quality leads. And I would believe that Alibaba.com is the answer to such problem.

For the last two decades, tens of thousands of businesses around the world have successfully leverage on the B2B online platform of Alibaba.com to source for their dream supplier and customer. And now being is a Business Coach and Alibaba.com GET Lecturer is my duty and mission to help more local SMEs to achieve this.

For the next couple of days, I shall be sharing some of the interesting, fun experiences and e-commerce business tips on what I learn during this Alibaba Hangzhou trip.

So stay tuned for more.

——————————————————————————

7 Oct

Small Fish Visitation to Corporate Hero Century Sdn Bhd

6 Oct

Business Coach LeikHong BizCoach have paid a visit to Teoh Chia Chun’s Corporate Hero office located at Sungai Petani.

Corporate Hero is a company that produced all kinds of corporate gifts – ranging from corporate uniform, t-shirt, cap, recycling bag and etc. Basically, if you need to do a customized gift, this is the hero you should be calling.
CC Teoh run a very in a very interesting company, he had successfully transformed a conventional business into a high values-driven company. Not only it produced high-quality corporate gifts but also a working environment that is really 1-Malaysia.
Teoh started his career as an engineer, while he doesn’t see much future in his career back then, he decided to come back to his hometown at Sungai Petani and helps his father who was a tailor as a sales person. He begins to approach companies, government agency, schools and associations who like to tailor made their organization uniform.
After much efforts, he realized that customized corporate uniform and T-Shirt is the trend and therefore he started his own company in 2006. Now Corporate Hero had been well established in Sungai Petani and been supplying all gifts and products not only in the northern region but across Malaysia as well.
——
Brand= Purpose+ People+ Culture
